This enormous Tiruvaiyaru temple, known as Dakshina Kailasam, is a Saivite shrine of great significance. It has five prakarams, several mandapas, and intricate sculptures. In this case, Somaskandar (Olokamaveedivitankar) is significant. The town of Tiruvaiyaru is better known for Saint Tyagaraja’s Samadhi, one of the most influential composers in the Karnatic music genre. Tiruppazhanam, Tiruchottruturai, Tiruvedikkudi, Tirukkandiyur, Tiruppanturai Tillaistanam, and Tiruvaiyaru are the Saptastana temples of Tiruvaiyaru. In the Chola kingdom, Tiruvaiyaru is regarded as the 51st in the Tevara Stalam succession, located north of the Kaveri River.
This magnificent 15-acre Tiruvaiyaru Temple features a 7-tiered Rajagopuram and five prakarams. In the second prakaram, close to the Japesa Mandapam (Kukti Mandapam), is a separate shrine dedicated to Somaskandar (Ologamaaaveedivitankar). Another important shrine in this area is the Shiva yoga Dakshinamurthy shrine.

There are two prakarams at the shrine dedicated to Ambala Darmasamvardhini Amman on its own. The Uttara Kailasam and the Dakshinakailasam are housed in the external prakaram. There are locations in this temple intended to create echoes, symbolizing the primordial essence of Sound – Nada Bhrammam. This Shivalingam is similar to the one at Tiruvarur.
History:
In a manner reminiscent of the Markandeya legend of Tirukkadavur and Vaikavur, Shiva appeared as a column of light to save a devotee by the name of Sucharitan from an early death. It is said that this is where Agasthyar got his physically dwarfed stature. It is said that Ambal used two measures of grains to worship Shiva.Festivals:
At Tirumazhapadi, the Tirukkalyanam of Nandi is observed during the month of Pankuni. The full moon in this area is very important. Every year, on the fifth day of Saptastana Utsavam, when Shiva is carried in a glass palanquin to the seven stanams of Tiruvaiyaru in the month of Aries, people celebrate Bhrammotsavam. While the Appar festival is held in the month of Aadi, the float festival is held on Avani Moolam.
Rituals carried out: Six worship sessions are held daily. Every month on the day of the new moon, Aiyarappar is brought down to the Kaveri River.
It is forbidden to walk around the shrine: Lord Shiva is a swayambumurthy at Tiruvaiyaru Temple. His thick and long turf is said to be all over the area behind the shrine. Circumambulation is prohibited because a devotee cannot afford to walk on the Jatamudi of the Lord.
The goddess: The mother goddess at the shrine is revered as Dharma Samvardhini in Sanskrit and Aram Valartha Nayaki in Tamil, which means Mother who preserves Dharma. Lord Shiva is worshipped as a swayambumurthy.
