India’s Varanasi is home to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the 12 temples where lord Shiva is said to have manifested as a column of light, making it one of the most significant Hindu temples in all of India.
Situated on the western bank of the Ganges River is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It is devoted to Shiva, the “Lord of the Universe” who has been revered here for hundreds of years as Vishwanatha or Vishweshwara.
The temple existed in multiple earlier iterations that may have been built more than a millennium ago. The Mughal emperor Akbar approved the first kashi vishwanath temple (Shiva temple) known extensive reconstruction in 1585. However, in 1699, his great-grandson Aurangzeb ordered its demolition, using the rubble to build a new mosque close by. The current building, which goes by the name “Golden Temple” due to the gold that was subsequently plated over its domes and spires, is thought to have been constructed in the eighteenth century by Ahalya Bai of the Holkar dynasty.
There is intricately carved decoration on the walls, columns, and beams. The main object of worship, a smooth black stone lingam that is 3 feet (0.9 meters) in circumference and 2 feet (0.6 meters) high, is surrounded by a large number of smaller lingams (symbols of the god Shiva) inside the temple compound, which is only visible to Hindus. The lingam is set on a silver pedestal. The courtyard has a number of smaller shrines with additional lingams and images of goddesses. The Jnana Vapi, or Wisdom Well, is located on an open colonnade to the north. Its water is said to bring enlightenment and wisdom.
Hinduism holds that taking a bath in the Ganges and visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple are significant steps on the road to moksha, or liberation. Every day, tens of thousands of pilgrims come to the temple. A magnificent procession from the Mahamrityunjaya Temple to the Kashi Vishwanath mandir Temple occurs annually during Mahashivaratri.
