Legends:

According to a well-known mythology, Kanva Rishi cursed Lord Vishnu and his spouse Lakshmi. In order to save them from the effects of the curse, Lord Shiva made his appearance here. On Pranava Hill, Lord Shiva is revered by Vishnu as “Vanmeekeswara.” Here, Lord Vishnu offered prayers to absolve himself of the sin of killing Soorapadman. Lord Muruga fought three wars at the locations of Tiruparankundram, Tiruchendur, and Thiruporur. The name Porur comes from a battle in Thiruporur between Murugan and Thaaraga, where Thaaraga was killed. “Por” in Tamil denotes warfare.

According to the Sthala puraanam, there was a downpour that engulfed the location. A sage from Madurai named Chidambaram Adigal came to this location after receiving a divine voice command to remove the statue from beneath a palm tree and build a temple around it. During the Vaikasi Visagam festival, this sage is honored with a particular shrine and revered with appropriate devotion. His union with the principal deity marks the festival’s last event.

The temple contains an image of Muruga discovered beneath a well-preserved palm leaf, which is commonly thought to be the original palm leaf. Thiru Pugaz by Arunagiri Naadhar mentions the temple. Kanda Shasti Kavasam and Chidambara Swamigal are 726 verses written by Bala Deva Raya.
