The Chakrapani Temple is a Hindu temple in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India, that honors Vishnu. After putting down Surya’s (the Sun’s) pride, Vishnu manifests as a discus or chakra, and Surya becomes his devotee. On His forehead, Lord Chakrapani bears a third eye, just like Shiva. This temple is among the most well-known in Kumbakonam.
Chakrapani Temple’s History:
When Govinda Dikshitar, the Nayak divan-administrator, built the Ramaswamy Temple in Kumbakonam in 1620, he also added a commercial corridor connecting it to the older Chakrapani temple.
Architecture of the Chakrapani Temple
The temple’s exquisite pillars are well-known. On his forehead, Chakrapani has a third eye displayed. A bronze statue of King Serfoji II, who is believed to have been healed of a disease by the grace of this god, is present, and he is shown worshiping the lord. The chief deity, Chakrapani, is housed in an elevated structure at the center of the shrine and has eight arms, each of which is armed. All of the shrines within the temple are surrounded by granite walls, which are punctured by the five-tiered rajagopuram, or gateway tower. Important idols in this temple are Panchamuga Aancheneyar, Agampara Vinayakar, and Vijayavalli. There is a panchamukha (five-faced) Hanuman in the prakaram, or outside the temple. The outer Prakara of this temple is designed like a balcony, and its eastern and western entrances are called “Thatchinaya Vayil” and “Utharavana Vayil,” respectively.
