Sri Thirumeniyazhakar Temple, Thiruvettakudi

In Sri Thirumeniyazhakar Temple at Thiruvettakudi Lord Shiva is a Swayambumurthi (self-manifesting) at this temple. This east-facing temple includes a five-tiered central tower (Rajagopuram) and a single corridor. The latest consecration ceremony (Kumbabishekam) took place on May 28, 1999.

History of the Temple

Thiruvettakkudi (“Thiru” is a courteous prefix, “Vedan” denotes hunter, and “Kudi” signifies village in Tamil). This location is also known as “Ambikapuram” since Goddess Parvathy is said to have been born here in a fisherman’s family (“Ambikai” means goddess, and “puram” means hamlet in Tamil). This location was once known as Punnagavanam, Devakodipuram, and Ambikapuram but is currently known as Thiruvettakkudi.

The temple features shrines and idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy, as well as Sundara Vinayakar, Murugan, Natarajar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahalakshmi, Durgai, Chandikeswarar, Navagraham, Nalvar, Suryan, Chandiran, Bairavar, and Aiyappan with his consorts Poorana and Pushkalai. The corridor houses a separate shrine for Lord Punnaivananathar.

Sri Thirumeniyazhakar Temple features

The procession idol of Lord Shiva as “Vedamurthy” (Vedan meaning hunter) and Goddess Parvathy as a hunting woman is stunning. When Lord Shiva came here to hunt, he brought Lord Murugan along with him. Both Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan are wielding the bow and arrow. It is unusual to see both Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan wielding bows and arrows.

The procession idol of Arjuna, who was bestowed with the “Pasupathasthiram,” is holding a bow and arrow. Lord Shiva is said to have graced this temple in the shapes of a fisherman and a hunter. Lord Shiva also appears in a separate shrine called “Sri Punnaivana Nathar.” The shrine also houses idols of Lord Saneeswaran and Saint Thirugnanasambanthar. This temple is notable for three key features: Moorthy, Sthalam, and Theertham – the splendor of the Lord, the holiness of the land, and the fortunate temple tank.

Greatness of this temple

Devotees think that worshiping the Lord here will relieve them of the adverse effects of the nine planets (Navagraham).

Separated spouses can also seek reunification by praying to Goddess Parvathy here.
